When is okay to beat my cat?

My cat makes a mess with his food, it's all out of the bowl. And his litter is all over the place. He even drags some turd nuggets out on the carpet, and the carpet is 10 yards away from the kitty litter. I've used the squirt bottle as a deter-ant, and even put some pepper in the water. At what point should I start striking him on the head?
