Who wrote the english dictionary?

Unlike in the USA, where you can say that Noah Webster wrote the definitive dictionary of American English in the early 1800s, in Britain there are several publishers who publish authoritative dictionaries of English. Among them: Oxford English Dictionary and Phillips. The first recognised one was compiled by Dr Johnson.
